Would You Wear An “Alternative” Engagement Ring?

Most of you are probably thinking, “What is an alternative engagement ring?” Those of us in the business used to say anything worn on the ring finger of one’s left hand that doesn’t involve a standard diamond (regardless of shape) set in a platinum, white gold, or yellow gold mounting. In the jeweler’s dictionary, “alternative’s” antonym would be the classic solitaire engagement ring.

Today, we are seeing more and more bridal couples favoring styles that are unique and different from the classics or more simply stated, alternative. At G. Thrapp Jewelers, bridal clients are flocking to the Megan Thorne bridal case and the Estate case in an attempt to find a one-of-a-kind piece (or at least with Megan Thorne something that sets them apart). Clients are selecting unique, more vintage settings and even checking out options featuring colored stones. These trends aren’t just occurring at G. Thrapp Jewelers, either. According to a Today article, many engagement ring shoppers are selecting anything from rough or colored diamonds to other gemstones such as morganite or pink tourmaline (Anderson, 2014).

What we’re wondering is what you think of this trend we’re currently seeing? Would you wear a vintage style engagement ring with unique rose cut diamonds? How about subtracting the center free grammar checker diamond from your engagement ring and swapping it out for another gemstone? Let us know!

Here are some different “alternative” engagement ring styles from G. Thrapp Jewelers’ showcases:

Round Brilliant, Emerald, Oval, Princess and L’Amour…

Most everyone has heard of diamond shapes such as round brilliant, emerald, oval, and princess cuts. But what about the L’Amour diamond? L’Amour is a never-before-seen shape, entirely new to the marketplace. Christopher Designs, one of G. Thrapp Jewelers’ bridal collections, recently introduced the L’Amour diamond, the newest member of the Crisscut family.

With 50 facets and a crystal clear mirrored reflection, the L’Amour diamond is a design masterpiece that makes a powerful and luxurious statement. The sparkle and brilliance of this diamond cut is unparalleled as light continuously bounces off the facets. The diamond is available in a range of sizes and customized styles, and features two straight sides that curve at the top and bottom. With sizing 40 to 50 percent larger than a regular emerald cut diamond, L’Amour is an ideal cut for the woman seeking a bold piece of jewelry that is classic and beautiful.

“L’Amour is such a wonderful addition to my trademark Crisscut stone and I am so thrilled to show it to the world,” said Christopher Slowinski, founder and designer at Christopher Designs. “Our original Crisscut diamond redefined just how brilliant a diamond can be, and I hope L’Amour reflects those same ideals of beauty, innovation and perfection that has become synonymous with Christopher Designs.”

L’Amour made its debut at the Las Vegas jewelry show in May, and has since arrived on the New York and global scene. Christopher Slowinski and his team have hopes that it reaches an audience that appreciates the classic Crisscut look and its unparalleled level of luxury and beauty.

Martin Flyer’s Bridal Party Preview

Since you’ll be browsing the largest selection of Martin Flyer inventory we’ll have in store this year at our Bridal Party on April 19th, we thought you might like to know some information about the brand, and of course, view some photos of their incredible engagement rings.

Martin Flyer opened its doors more than 65 years ago and is one of the most recognizable names in the jewelry industry today. Now based in a 10,000 square foot facility in Manhattan’s diamond district, the family business continues to carry out the Flyer tradition of providing customers with the highest quality products, competitive prices, and first class service.

Martin Flyer’s FlyerFit line was created in 2006. FlyerFit rings seek to eliminate “the dreaded gap” that exists between the engagement ring and the wedding band so the two rings fit together perfectly.

Martin Flyer engagement rings are broken down by five categories: Three Stone, Solitaire, Shared Prong, Micro Pave and Channel in order to simplify the buying process. Pick your favorite! There are images of all five categories below.

What’s Hot Now…

From now until our bridal party on April 19th, we are kicking engagement posts into high gear. We are obsessed with everything that is diamond and sparkly, and of course, trendy! G. Thrapp has a variety of colored diamonds, double halo settings, mixed metals, floral detailed, twisted bands and East-West setting engagement rings, all of which were named as The Knot’s “2014 Engagement Ring Trends”. We’ve compiled pictures of rings at G. Thrapp Jewelers that match the trends predicted by The Knot. Which trend do you like the best?

Colorful Diamonds are great for a woman that is really looking to make a unique statement with her engagement ring. G. Thrapp has sold several yellow diamonds and a few pink and blue.

Double Halo engagement settings are popular because they add a significant amount of sparkle and they make the diamond look even larger.

Mixed-Metals are really trendy in the jewelry industry so it is no surprise that people are starting to purchase mixed-metal engagement rings. These Beverley K Collection bands come together to make a flawless stacked look. We love these rings because by combining two metals (namely gold and silver) you never have to worry about your ring matching your other jewelry!

Twisted Bands are a nice way to add a touch of whimsical femininity to an engagement ring, and the soft lines are a great added detail.

Floral Detailed engagement rings are perfect for the woman that wants to throw the traditional setting to the wind. They are very romantic and typically add a touch of femininity to a vintage style ring. As you can see, they are also VERY unique.

East-West Settings actually make the diamond appear larger – this is becoming popular for marquise, ovals and emeralds cut diamonds. G. Thrapp Jewelers has custom designed several east-west rings, including the ring pictured below.

For the Whimsical Woman…

MTLOGO

It is no surprise that Megan Thorne has been featured in Vogue, Brides and Lucky. Her creations are instantly recognizable because they combine whimsical, antique and contemporary design into a truly unique piece. Because of the intimate size of the operation, Thorne touches every piece and she enjoys connecting with every couple as their personal stories shape the design of their rings. It is this intimacy with her craft and materials that brings forth the integrity of every piece.

Her bridal collection is perfect for women who have an appreciation for art and intricacy. She is not afraid to go against the grain and break the rules of the “traditional” engagement rings. The wearer of a Megan Thorne ring wants something that is uniquely her own.

Sales associate, Julie Wilson said, “Women are really drawn to Megan Thorne, they love her pieces and they tend to come back looking to add to their collection. Most of the pieces we sell at G. Thrapp are yellow or rose gold.”

Sales Associate, Michelle Farmer loves Megan Thorne’s designs because they are so incredibly unique. Her favorite ring is the emerald cut, picture frame ring because of its feminine, unique setting. It doesn’t look like anything else in the market.

Sales Associate and Watch Specialist, Joshua Shanafelt said, “I love the style of Megan Thorne’s engagement collection. Surprisingly enough, a few of my clients have reset their original diamond into a Megan Thorne ring and worn it as a right hand ring. They usually will then purchase a larger carat weight diamond for their original engagement ring.”
