Would You Wear An “Alternative” Engagement Ring?

Most of you are probably thinking, “What is an alternative engagement ring?” Those of us in the business used to say anything worn on the ring finger of one’s left hand that doesn’t involve a standard diamond (regardless of shape) set in a platinum, white gold, or yellow gold mounting. In the jeweler’s dictionary, “alternative’s” antonym would be the classic solitaire engagement ring.

Today, we are seeing more and more bridal couples favoring styles that are unique and different from the classics or more simply stated, alternative. At G. Thrapp Jewelers, bridal clients are flocking to the Megan Thorne bridal case and the Estate case in an attempt to find a one-of-a-kind piece (or at least with Megan Thorne something that sets them apart). Clients are selecting unique, more vintage settings and even checking out options featuring colored stones. These trends aren’t just occurring at G. Thrapp Jewelers, either. According to a Today article, many engagement ring shoppers are selecting anything from rough or colored diamonds to other gemstones such as morganite or pink tourmaline (Anderson, 2014).

What we’re wondering is what you think of this trend we’re currently seeing? Would you wear a vintage style engagement ring with unique rose cut diamonds? How about subtracting the center diamond from your engagement ring and swapping it out for another gemstone? Let us know!

Here are some different “alternative” engagement ring styles from G. Thrapp Jewelers’ showcases:

Every woman needs a strand of….

You guessed it: Pearls- the birthstone of June and classic, timeless jewelry accessory. Whether dressing for an interview, a formal event, or simply accessorizing your favorite outfit, pearls are a staple jewelry piece. A piece that’s often overlooked, pearls have the power to transform an outfit, and we are HUGE fans of the Old Hollywood glam look.

When envisioning pearl jewelry, most people picture the traditional strand of white pearls worn by icons such as Coco Chanel and Grace Kelly. But the size, shape and color of pearls can vary greatly depending on where the pearl was grown. Below you will see images of both uniform strands (all pearls are approximately the same size and shape) and graduated strands (shape of the pearl will vary). To learn more about pearls, visit the American Gem Society’s website.

We suggest that if you don’t have a set of pearls- earrings, bracelet, necklace, etc.- that you head to the jewelry store nearest you (unless it doesn’t happen to be G. Thrapp Jewelers because who are we kidding.. we want you to shop here). At G. Thrapp Jewelers, there’s no shortage of pearl designer jewelry. Pearls are incorporated into the elaborate collections of Bebe&Tay, Yvel, Konstantino, Mizuki and more.

We LOVE These Jewelry Storage Ideas!

Sure, jewelry boxes are okay, but how about something that can brighten up your room or make for more unique jewelry storage. We went next door to Be the Boutique, and gathered any type of stand, bowl or tray we could find. We had so much fun experimenting with these brightly colored pieces. We made sure to list what we used in the making of the jewelry storage display as well as the designer jewelry photographed underneath each image. As you can see, things like mirrors, cake platters, coffee cups, measuring cups and even candle holders can make for surprisingly great jewelry holders! (This could also be a wonderful gift idea!)

Of course, after you visit Be the Boutique at 56th & Illinois for your jewelry storage purchase, be sure to stop G. Thrapp Jewelers and buy some jewelry to fill that storage!

Behind the Scenes…

Yesterday, G. Thrapp hosted our third photo shoot for our “Take A Stand” campaign. The “Take A Stand” advertising campaign is our way of showcasing philanthropic organizations throughout our community that are doing their part to make Indianapolis a better, more “radiant” place to live. G. Thrapp was built upon the premise of being civically minded, and for 30 years, we have always done our part to help out in the community whether it is with donations, attending the events, etc. We are honored to be able to lend our advertising space in both Indianapolis Monthly and Sophisticated Living to these worthy organizations in hopes that it will raise awareness about their cause and G. Thrapp’s love for our Indianapolis community. In 2013, we donated over $150,000 to local organizations including the organizations featured in our “Take A Stand” campaign.

The employees at G. Thrapp help select the philanthropic organizations we partner with and highlight each month. Yesterday’s photo shoot included Jessica Benson Cox, Board member of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and co-chair of the upcoming Promise Gala hosted by JDRF. During our chat with Jessica, she said, “as a new mother, I stress about little things like clipping my baby’s nails and I couldn’t imagine having to give my child a shot every day.” Jessica spoke passionately about how she personally is striving for a cure for Juvenile Diabetes and a world where mothers don’t have to give their children anymore shots. Find Jessica’s picture and information about JDRF’s Promise Gala in the March/April issue of Sophisticated Living and the April issue of Indianapolis Monthly!

The Indianapolis 500 Festival Queen, Allison Jacob, was also at G. Thrapp today for the photo shoot. Allison is one of 33 collegiate women that were selected to serve as ambassadors for the 500 Festival, raising awareness about all of the activities tied to the Festival throughout the month of May. Allison looked fabulous wearing the Queen’s crown which was custom-designed and hand fabricated by G. Thrapp’s Design Studio. G. Thrapp is extremely honored to be able to work with the princesses year after year as the official jeweler of the 500 Festival Princess Program. Look for Allison’s debut in Indianapolis Monthly during the month of May!

We would like to thank Do-tique and Krystal Goodwine of Allier Beauty for doing an extraordinary job on Jessica and Allison’s hair and makeup! We hope our models enjoyed their day of pampering as much as we enjoyed spreading the word about their respective organizations. Here is a sneak peak of the amazing photos:

Estate

The idea of estate jewelry is romantic in itself – it’s a tiny piece of history that you get to share with someone who lived long before your time. G. Thrapp Jewelers is home to one of the best Estate collections in the Midwest – and the best part is that most of the pieces have been collected from Indianapolis families (as opposed to a trade show). These pieces are one-of-a-kind items encompassing many different time periods. Our Estate case boasts jewelry from the best design houses in the industry such as Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier. Over the years G. Thrapp has sold a variety of Art Deco rings and bracelets, English crystals, Edwardian pins and broaches and Victorian cuff bracelets. Our case is full of unique pendants, broaches, line bracelets and rings.

We have found that pieces from this collection are perfect for the fashion forward woman who has everything. We say that because all the pieces are one-of-a-kind. Women who draw inspiration from different eras are likely to fall in love with our extensive collection of estate jewelry.

Cynthia Ann Hearts

G. Thrapp Jewelers is Cynthia Ann’s number one account in the nation. Last November, we hosted a Cynthia Ann trunk show, and her revitalized vintage heart padlock collection was a best seller. Cynthia Ann introduced the hearts into her collection to bring forward and incorporate a touch of history (as seen in the religious medals). Originally the Antique English padlocks were worn on a bracelet and given to a loved one as a symbol of affection. Before going off to war, gentlemen would leave the bracelet locked around his loved one’s wrist and he would hold the key until his return. The heart shaped padlock was fashionable in the Victorian and Edwardian periods and Cynthia Ann has embellished the locks to bring them into today’s fashionable standards.

The locks are a perfect, one-of-a-kind gift for women of all ages. They are more than religious metals; they are also a fashion statement and a token of love. These pieces are great to layer and you can always add on a new charm to your favorite piece! Our buyer, Dana Friedman, wears her heart padlock on a short chain, and wears her Cynthia Ann religious medal on a longer chain. If you desire a complete look or already have a medal and a heart padlock, Cynthia Ann also has lovely medals, earrings, and bracelets that we adore!

 Samantha Louise Earrings

If you’re an avid fan of G. Thrapp Jewelers, you will notice that Samantha Louise practically ALWAYS makes it onto our top gift picks. We love Samantha Louise Jewelry because she’s an Indianapolis native designer, and her collection includes pieces that are great for women of all ages. Sales associate, Mary Leppert said, “Sometimes it can be difficult to find colored stud earrings, but Samantha Louise earrings have an elegant, fresh design that incorporate colors in a way that is unlike anything else in the industry.”

G. Thrapp Jewelers carries a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors but one thing is true of all of them – they are all simple, elegant and very wearable. Perfect for the woman who believes that “simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.”

Bebe&Tay

Unique to G. Thrapp, Bebe & Tay is a distinctive jewelry line created by owner, Gary Thrapp’s wife, Barbi. Since most stones are unique, no two pieces are alike. Her signature line includes healing bracelets using natural stones and charms, featuring trees of life and other religious symbols. Her pieces are trendy and well-priced for those that yearn for the latest jewelry styles, but can’t afford to spend well into the hundreds.

Bebe&Tay’s blush pink pearl bracelets with a pave heart diamond truly embody the spirit of Valentine’s Day. Many wearers of her bracelets like to create a stacked look featuring her creations.

Heather B. Moore

“This collection is not about impulse jewelry; it’s about documenting all that’s important in your life and remembering what shaped you. I am so honored to have the opportunity to make heirloom pieces. And just how all treasured things are passed down through families, this is how your story will be told.” – Heather B. Moore

Whether you are purchasing jewelry for someone young or old, a mother, sister, or daughter, these pieces are great for all ages. Marketing Director, Lauren Bauer, says, “You can truly make a Heather B. Moore necklace your own. I am pretty simple when it comes to jewelry so I chose a short chain with an initial charm, a stone, and a diamond to fit my current taste. In the future, I’ll most likely want to add charms to represent those memories just like Heather B. Moore envisioned.” Like Lauren said, one of the best parts about buying a piece of Heather B. Moore’s charm collection is that you can keep adding on to it, year after year.
